Equity Action Initiative
The Equity Action Initiative (EAI) is one of the many changes DEI is incorporating into its strategic plan to incorporate a more inclusive environment. Some of those changes include a campus climate survey to gauge how black students, staff and faculty feel about their sense of belonging and the reforming of hiring and promotional tactics to identify and remove discriminatory practices. Also, establishing a Black Faculty Association to promote those issues and causes and providing a safe space for black faculty and staff to discuss ideas and topics.
Juneteenth
As part of the EAI, FIU declared Juneteenth an official day of observance. In support of that, DEI held a week long celebration dedicated to African American freedom and achievement. The theme of the celebration, "Educate, Celebrate, Heal" was represented by a number of events that provided scholarship and mentoring opportunities for some of our most promising students.
Mentoring Initiatives
In January 2022, DEI and Big Brother Big Sister of Miami (BBBSM) launched the Panther Partnership Mentoring program. This program is a one-to-one program providing these high school students with career readiness and job-shadowing experiences with FIU faculty and staff. The program will also provide 20 university-bound 10th, 11th, and 12th graders a Florida Prepaid Scholarship to FIU. This program allows FIU to give back to the community by supporting youths from nearby high schools.
