As part of our commitment to promote a culture of inclusivity and belonging at our University, the following trainings are recommended for faculty and staff.

Search and Screening Training

To serve as a search and screen committee member, all members must complete the FIU search and screen training. This training is a joint session hosted by the Office of Civil Rights Compliance and Accessibility, the Office of the Provost | Planning & Finance, and the Division of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.

Getting Started with Ally

Make your LMS digital content more accessible with Ally.

  • Integrates seamlessly with Instructure Canvas
  • Automatically checks course materials against WCAG 2.2 accessibility standards
  • Provides students with accessible alternative formats such as audio and electronic braille
  • Delivers guidance to instructors to improve the accessibility of their course content using scores and accessibility report.

Students can use the Ally provided alternative formats that best match their learning style such as Tagged PDF, HTML, ePUB and Electronic Braille, to name a few.

Safe Zone Advocate Training

This course is for all FIU part-time and full-time faculty and staff, including student staff. Participants will earn professional development credit for taking the initiative to learn about LGBTQIA+ identities, genders and sexualities, and examine prejudice, assumptions, and privilege. LGBTQIA+ folx sometimes question whether they will feel safe, welcomed, or supported in new environments. Those who are trained in the Safe Zone curriculum receive Safe Zone stickers and signature icons which, when displayed, communicate to others a commitment to making and creating inclusive environments for LGBTQIA+ peoples. Participants will also be listed on the lgbt.fiu.edu website, indicating their completion of the training and their commitment as advocates.

Kognito - Together Strong for Students

Returning veterans enter the classroom with valuable life and leadership experiences; however, transitioning to civilian and student life represents unique challenges. With more than a million student veterans representing 4% of the total student population, it is imperative for schools to train their faculty and staff on how to create an academic environment that is supportive of student veterans leading to higher rates of graduation, retention, and academic success. This interactive role-play simulation for student leaders and student veterans that builds understanding and appreciation of the challenges faced by veterans and prepares users to lead real-life conversations with veterans struggling to adjust to civilian life. This training drives sustainable changes in behaviors that support help-seeking, resilience, peer support, and stigma reduction.

Kognito - Veterans on Campus for Faculty and Staff

“Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging for All” is a 7-module learning path available for free to FIU faculty and staff through LinkedIn Learning, which reviews the challenges and opportunities inherent in working in diverse organizations. This transformative learning path covers current thinking and best practices on essential topics such as bias, cultural competence, communication, allyship, and accountability.
