Office to Advance Women, Equity & Diversity
The Office to Advance Women, Equity & Diversity (AWED) develops and manages a wide range of programs to promote faculty equity, diversity and inclusion, including workshops and trainings to improve faculty hiring and promotion processes, faculty mentoring, and interdisciplinary networking.
Other activities include strategic planning for salary equity, policy analysis and development, and other initiatives that support faculty diversity. FIU’s National Science Foundation Institutional Transformation project, FIU ADVANCE, also is housed within AWED. FIU ADVANCE aims to increase, retain and promote more women and underrepresented minority faculty at FIU.

The Office of Social Justice & Inclusion works with students, faculty, and staff to:

Center for Women’s and Gender Studies
The Center for Women’s and Gender Studies bolsters the university’s reputation for excellence and relevance in the 21st century by fostering intellectual exchange, creative pursuits, social justice advocacy, and global perspectives.
The Women’s Center at FIU was established to provide FIU students with programs and services related to their intellectual, professional, and personal growth. The Women’s Center collaborates and coordinates with other University departments and student organizations to meet the needs and enhance the lives of the varied female population on campus.
Veteran and Military Affairs
The Office of Veteran and Military Affairs is committed to delivering and facilitating comprehensive “military-friendly” services and programs for Florida International University veteran and military-affiliated learners, including active duty, reservists, eligible dependents and spouses enrolled at FIU. The team is available to ensure each veteran and military-affiliated learner successfully transitions to college life and fulfills their professional goals, and can assist in receiving educational benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
As an established office within Multicultural Program and Services (MPAS) since 2012, LGBTQA Initiatives works to create an environment of Empowerment, Affirmation, and Inclusion for LGBTQA+ students, faculty, and staff at Florida International University (FIU) through education, advocacy, and celebration.

Student Access & Success
The Office of Student Access & Success (SAS) is committed to improving students’ learning and success by providing engaged learning experiences through meaningful and strategic programming and services that will facilitate successful transitions between pre-collegiate, undergraduate and graduate education. Programs run through SAS that support access and equity include:
The Education Effect aligns university expertise, resources, and research-based intervention programs focused on youth development, family involvement, teacher professional development, and community engagement. The strategic partnership addresses pressing educational and social needs of students from elementary through high school and beyond.
The Golden Scholars bridge program is an alternative admissions program for under-represented students. Priority is given to first-generation students and City of Miami high school seniors. Students selected to be Golden Scholars will participate in an intensive six-week residential summer bridge program that offers academic preparation, individualized advising, and personal attention from faculty and staff.
Fostering Panther Pride offers tailored academic and support services to former foster youth and students experiencing homelessness. The program’s primary goal is to assist these students in their transition to FIU, their retention and graduation, and their pursuit of securing employment or graduate studies upon earning their bachelor’s degree.
SAS also hosts TRIO programs (Upward Bound, Educational Talent Search, McNair and Student Support Services) who serve in many of the high schools in the community and serve as support to the students once they matriculate at FIU.
FIU Embrace is a university-wide initiative that promotes health, wellness, and overall functioning for adults with developmental disabilities, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), intellectual disabilities (ID), and other neurodevelopmental disorders (OND). It seeks to help these persons lead healthy lives and maximize their individual potential across their lifespan.

Women are a growing force in engineering and computer science. According to the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE), women earned 21.9% of bachelor’s degrees, 26.7% of master’s degrees and 23.6% of doctoral degrees in engineering in the US as of 2018.

The Center for the Advancement of Teaching (CAT) endeavors to cultivate and sustain a university culture that values and engages in inclusive/culturally responsive, evidence-based teaching practices to promote intellectual and personal growth.
CAT values and therefore promotes equity and social justice because a college degree has the potential to change our students’ lives and those of their families and communities, yet inequities exist and persist. We want to identify and support the elimination of barriers and contribute to FIU’s efforts to advance social mobility by creating safe and supportive opportunities for faculty to collaboratively identify the possibilities and challenges inherent in teaching across cultures and differences. Likewise, we want to help faculty teach students how to work effectively with diverse peers, an essential aptitude and one that results in maximizing everyone’s learning.
