Established in 2016, AWED aims to achieve and sustain faculty equity and diversity as an essential element of FIU’s academic excellence. AWED develops and manages a wide range of programs to promote faculty equity, diversity, and inclusion, including workshops and trainings to improve faculty hiring and promotion processes, faculty mentoring, and interdisciplinary networking.
Other activities include strategic planning for salary equity, policy analysis and development, and other initiatives that support faculty diversity. FIU’s National Science Foundation Institutional Transformation project, FIU ADVANCE, also is housed within AWED. FIU ADVANCE aims to increase, retain and promote more women and underrepresented minority faculty at FIU.
(FMP) is offered to all faculty ranks, including tenure-line, research, clinical, and instructors. FMP includes one-on-one mentoring, mentor training, networking events, and structured skills-training presentations related to enhancing faculty productivity. The Florida Alliance for Graduate Education in the Professoriate (FL-AGEP) is a collaborative research model among the University of South Florida, an urban public research university; Florida International University, an urban Hispanic-serving research university (HSI); and Bethune Cookman University, Florida A&M University, and Florida Memorial University, three Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs).
The project’s overall goal is to develop, implement, study, evaluate, disseminate, and sustain a Florida alliance centered on increasing the number and successful outcomes of minority women doctoral students, post-doctoral scholars, and early-career faculty in the state of Florida.
